As part of an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), the Department of Public Service has agreed to facilitate an independent review and examination of LIPA’s preparations for Hurricane Irene, including LIPA’s communications with customers and municipal and other officials responsible for responding to emergencies prior to, during, and in the aftermath of the Storm, among other items.
DPS is undertaking a similar review and examination of the storm preparations and responses of New York’s investor-owned utilities in connection with the IOU reports filed pursuant to 16 N.Y.C.R.R. § 105 and Public Service Law (PSL) § 66.
This examination will allow DPS to evaluate the storm preparation and responses of LIPA in connection with DPS’s review of the IOUs pursuant to a set of uniform procedures and standards and in such a manner that allows DPS to recommend modifications of Emergency Response Plans prepared by each of the utilities and LIPA.
