Electricity is an essential service that affects virtually every aspect of modern life. Electricity allows people to turn on lights at the flip of a switch, watch television, use computers and keep food cold in the refrigerator.

The PSC is responsible for overseeing the performance of electric corporations under Commission jurisdiction to ensure that they provide safe, adequate, and efficient service at just and reasonable rates, with concern for the environment.

This page provides information the the electric utilities regulated by the Commission, the Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) operating in New York, programs and initiatives regarding electric supply and guides to help consumers make informed decisions regarding their electric service.

Commission Cases and Proceedings:

    Case 14-F-0490 Cassadaga Wind Project
    Cassadaga Wind, LLC (Cassadaga) filed an application seeking approval under Article 10 of the Public Service Law (PSL) to construct and operate a 126 Megawatt (MW) electric generating wind project. The project is proposed to be located in the Towns of Charlotte, Cherry Creek, Arkwright and Stockton in Chautauqua County.

    Cases 16-E-0060 & 16-G-0061: Con Edison's Proposed Rate Request
    Con Edison requested that the NYS Public Service Commission approve proposed increases in its electric and gas rates.

    Case 16-E-0033: Ogdensburg Energy Facility
    AG-Energy filed a petition with the NYS Public Service Commission seeking approval to restart their electric generation at the Ogdensburg Energy Facility.

    Case 15-E-0307: Massena Electric Department Proposed Electric Rate Increase
    The Massena Electric Department and the Staff of the Department of Public Service filed a Joint Proposal seeking approval of a one-year rate plan.

    Cases 15-E-0283 & 15-E-0285: New York State Electric & Gas/Rochester Gas & Electric Rate Increase
    In May 2015, New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric Corporation (RGE) requested the NYS Public Service Commission to approve a proposed increase to their electric rates. On February 19, 2016, they filed a Joint Proposal (JP) that proposes to resolve all matters relating to Companies’ electric and gas rates and services through April 30, 2019. This JP also included the proposed closure of three walk-in office locations located in Belmont, Geneseo and Mechanicville. The closures would occur between September 2016 and May 2017

    Case 17-E-0057 Port Jefferson and Glenwood Energy Centers
    National Grid filed a petition with the New York State Public Service Commission (Commission) seeking to eliminate the restrictions that limits energy generation from its Port Jefferson (Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County) and Glenwood Energy (Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County) Centers.

    Case 11-T-0534 Electric Reliability Project
    The New York State Public Service Commission (Commission) today said it had selected new sites for the construction of a new substation and transmission line that are needed to strengthen the resiliency and ensure the reliability of the electric grid in the region surrounding Rochester.
